GM Inspectorate

The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is responsible for the control of the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in England, and for national, EU and international policy on the environmental safety of GMOs. The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) provides Defra with GM inspection and enforcement services for the deliberate release of GMOs.

The GM Inspectorate has authority under Part VI of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for inspection and enforcement of the release and marketing of GMOs in England. The SASA GM Inspectorate performs the same duties for Scotland.

See the Defra website for background information on the regulations controlling the deliberate release of GMOs.
