Exercise Programme

Rescue services worker on HPA exercise

As part of the Public Health England funded programme directed by the EPRR Partnership Board chaired by the Department of Health, the Emergency Response Department runs exercises to test emergency preparedness in the health sector. These exercises test current health emergency plans, helping to ensure that a wide cross-section of organisations can respond in a rapid and coordinated way to a range of incidents.

Since inception (2003), the department has delivered 214 exercises and trained 12,264 participants (as at 12 March 2013).

Below is a selection of exercises that the department have conducted.

Exercise Greystoke

A large scale field exercise involving triage and treatment of large numbers of casualties following a building collapse and fire.
Exercise date: 5 July 2011

Exercise Vandella

A level 4 heat wave scenario with the additional impact of disruption to electricity and water supplies during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Exercise date: 20 March 2012

Exercise Apollo

E.coli outbreak scenario in Essex and the subsequent public health response.
Exercise date: 16 – 20 April 2012

Exercise Sentinel series

A series of three escalating command post exercises designed to provide assurance and evidence of the new Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response (EPRR) structures. These included the NHS Commissioning Board and Public Health England to ensure they have the procedures and capabilities to deal effectively with emergencies.
Exercise date: 7 November 2012, 23 January and 6 February 2013

Exercise POSE UK

The scenario was a confirmed case of polio in a London hospital. Epidemiology indicated several cases in London and Leeds.

Off The Shelf Exercise (OTSE)

ERD have produced three OTSEs for hospital evacuation, burns incident and a communicable disease outbreak. Each is a self-contained exercise that allows organisations to exercise their response to a particular incident.
