Success story - Traveller

GrowthAccelerator really got under the skin of our business. Their enthusiasm was so reassuring, and having that third party there to mediate and provide external perspective was crucial. The whole service – in particular the Orbit Diagram process, which was pivotal – has been really good for us.

The challenge

Having traded at Newcastle International Airport for around eight years, Traveller was looking to develop a strong base for business growth. Within two-to-five years, they wanted to replicate their business model across other UK airports and build their holiday wardrobe brand. But with their hands full running the business, the team needed external help and expertise to put these plans into action.

The GrowthAccelerator solution

Watch a video showing Traveller’s journey with the GrowthAccelerator service.Traveller met with Growth Manager Denise Franks, and completed an online questionnaire as part of GROWTHmapper, a bespoke assessment tool which covers the key aspects of growing a successful business. Denise scrutinised their answers to identify the company’s strengths and weaknesses and plot the best way forward.

Next, Denise developed a ‘scope of support’, which formed the brief for Traveller’s appointed Growth Coach, Paul Lilley. Paul, whose background was considered a perfect match for the company, was brought in to meet the team to ensure they all got on. He then worked with Traveller to put in place a rigorous growth schedule, which included:

  • Orbit Diagram sessions to build the growth plan for the business. Through this unique coaching tool, Traveller considered where they want to be in five years’ time, and what they need to do to get there
  • Identifying priority areas for action in six and 12-month blocks, with small steps that can be taken to help achieve the company’s goals
  • Bringing a stringent external focus to the business, which helped the team take a rational rather than emotional approach

Progress and outcomes

Taking a short-term, six-month approach, the company has been able to achieve some of its goals a lot quicker than anticipated. With new-found clarity and focus, Traveller has been carefully researching UK airports as part of its expansion plans. Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh seem likely growth destinations, while a number of others also look possible in terms of passenger flows and profiles.

The forum for thought and discussion GrowthAccelerator helped to establish has been hugely beneficial. Away from the phones and day-to-day operations, the team has been able to achieve a good overview of the company and make clear business decisions.
