Careers Reserves Royal Navy

Life as an RFA Rating

As a rating you're the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s specially trained personnel. Your skills will be vital to the success of operations, all around the world.

Much of your training in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary will be on the job. But you’ll also be fully funded as you get your Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) certificates and other NVQs to at least Level 2. These will develop your career within the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. But they're also recognised by other Merchant Navy employers too.

To start off with you'll begin your career as a rating. As you gain experience and prove yourself you could move up the ranks to become a Chief Petty Officer. And if you show the right commitment, skills and academic ability you could have the chance of becoming an officer. Find out more about the steps to joining, the training, salary – and more – below.

Much of your training in the RFA will be on the job. But you’ll also be fully funded to gain your Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) certificates. And if you’re an officer, you’ll have the chance to be funded while you gain higher degrees and management qualifications.
