Effort use statistics

Fishing effort exerted by UK vessels is monitored throughout the year by fisheries administrations in accordance with European legislation. Monthly statistics are provided to the European Commission to supervise control of fishing effort by the UK.

Release dates

Statistics on effort use in the Cod Recovery Zone and Western Waters are submitted to the European Commission on the 15th day of each month. The information provided to the Commission will be available for download from this page on the following working day. Monthly information on effort deployed in the Sole Recovery Zone is not currently requested by the Commission.

The latest statistics are provided below, showing cumulative effort use by UK vessels this year. These figures are published as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and PDF files.

Background information

Council Regulation (EC) No 1342/2008 establishes the current regime of effort restrictions for over 10 metre vessels fishing with regulated gear in the cod recovery zone, with data reporting requirements and maximum allowable fishing effort for each year detailed in Council Regulation (EU) No 57/2011.

Council Regulation (EU) No 57/2011 describes current effort restrictions for over 10 metre vessels fishing with regulated gear in the sole recovery zone. The Commission does not currently request regular reports on effort deployed in the sole recovery zone.

Council Regulation (EC) No 1954/2003 establishes controls on fishing effort in the Western Waters for over 15 metre vessels targeting certain species, including limitations on effort for over 10 metres vessels in the biologically sensitive area. Data reporting requirements are described in Commission Regulation (EC) No 2103/2004, with the maximum allowable fishing effort in each area set in Council Regulation (EC) No 1415/2004.

In the cod and sole recovery zones (CRZ/SRZ), management of fishing effort is through a system of allocation of days at sea to individual vessel owners. This is managed separately by each fisheries administration. The MMO manages the Days at Sea Scheme in the CRZ and SRZ for vessels administered in England and Wales.

In the Western Waters, levels of fishing effort are currently not actively managed by fisheries administrations. The MMO and other fisheries administrations are currently examining how to meet European obligations to control fishing effort in the Western Waters in response to increased effort in ICES Area VII.
