Monthly statistics

Before 1984, all UK catch statistics were provided to the fisheries departments on a voluntary basis. Since that year the regulations of the Common Fisheries Policy have required those UK vessels which account for most of the fish caught to provide to the UK fisheries departments information on each trip including the main species caught, the area of capture and the quantities landed.

User consultation

Following our 2011 assessment by the UK Statistics Authority we are planning a review of the monthly landings report, and to help steer this review we would like to invite you to take part in a user consultation exercise in January and February 2014.

Do you regularly use the monthly landings report? Would you like to share your views on what you would like to see included, or changes to the way data is displayed? If so then email us at statistics@marinemanagement.org.uk to register your interest.

We will contact those that register an interest to help inform any changes – one change already planned is to release the data tables in Excel as well as PDF as we do with our other outputs. We would welcome views on this and any other suggestions for change to increase the usability of the data within the repor.

Release dates

The monthly statistics will be released on the 20th of each month or the next working day if the 20th is a bank holiday or weekend.

Additional information is collected to complete, as far as possible, the coverage of fishery activity.

The combined data provide the main source of catch and landings statistics for UK vessels. This information is used by fisheries departments to monitor the uptake of quotas and levels of fishing activity in the various UK sea fisheries throughout the year, providing an important input into decisions taken on the management of these fisheries.

For example, the catch and landings statistics provide a system for monitoring the uptake of the UK share of stocks for which annual total allowable catches are set.

In any year once the statistics indicate a quota has been taken in full, the fishery is closed.
