Ofsted reports in citizenship and materials for schools 

  • Citizenship established? Citizenship in schools 2006/09 - 22 January 2010. This report shows steady progress as citizenship becomes more widely understood, but also highlights what schools need to do to establish it more firmly.
  • Professional development for citizenship teachers and leaders - 26 February 2009. Seventeen higher education institutions now offer accredited training courses in citizenship for serving teachers, funded by the then Department for Children, Schools and Families. The courses help participants to build their subject knowledge and skills to improve the quality of citizenship provision in their own schools. This report is based on the 15 courses that Ofsted evaluated in 2007/08.
  • Towards consensus? Citizenship in secondary schools - 28 September 2006. This report draws on evidence from both whole-school inspections and focused subject inspections and reflects on the period since citizenship was introduced into the secondary school National Curriculum in 2002.

Inspectors visit 150 schools each year to inform Ofsted’s subject surveys in English, mathematics and science. Survey visits for other subjects are less frequent but continue to take place from time to time.

Inspectors will continue to visit a small number of schools to report on good practice across the full range of subjects as well as other aspects of provision.

Case studies of good practice in citizenship in schools

Using curriculum days to extend citizenship learning: Mossbourne Community Academy - 3 May 2012. Mossbourne Community Academy successfully promotes and encourages students’ active citizenship and positive contribution to the school and wider community. A cross-curricular approach to citizenship is complemented by a series of off-timetable days for the whole school. Three of these days centre on citizenship; the fourth is dedicated to personal, social and health education (PSHE). The impact of these days is impressive and the quality of learning excellent. 

Good practice in Key Stage 3 citizenship - 21 June 2011. A secondary school that has used its humanities specialist status to develop an outstanding citizenship curriculum at Key Stage 3 using a well considered, integrated humanities approach. 

Developing pupils as leaders - 4 March 2011. Leadership skills are developed from the Early Years upwards. The levels of pupil participation and involvement in school decision-making are remarkable and contribute strongly to their outstanding personal and social development.

Motivating young people through music: Sound It Out Community Music - 7 November 2011. Sound It Out’s ‘Initi8’ project demonstrates how music can be a powerful force in inspiring young people, motivating them, building their self-esteem and helping them to progress through involvement in music projects, either as a participant or through working as a volunteer.

Preparing children to be 21st century citizens, contributing to sustainable communities: Southwood School - 9 February 2012. Children are prepared to become valued members of the local community. They are involved in key decision-making in the school and the community. They are taught to develop a social and moral conscience and skills for the future, including conflict resolution and critical thinking.
