What we’re doing

The government has 4 aims to help the economy to grow: to create the most competitive tax system in the G20; to make the UK the best place in Europe to start, finance and grow a business; to encourage investment and exports as a route to a more balanced economy; and to create a more educated workforce that is the most flexible in Europe.


  1. Stimulating private sector investment to achieve a transformation in broadband in the UK by 2015

    How the government is removing barriers to growth so the UK can compete in a rapidly changing global economy.

  3. Reducing the deficit and rebalancing the economy

    Reducing the deficit - the gap between what we spend and raise in taxes – is central to the government’s economic plans. We also want to correct the imbalance between the public and private sectors that built up in the decade before the financial crisis began.

  11. Helping the economy in Wales to grow

    What we're doing to regulate the gambling industry and help keep it crime-free, fair and open, while protecting vulnerable people.

  13. Making European funding work better for the UK economy

    The government is expanding and improving the rail network to improve passengers' journeys and support economic growth

    Town centres across the country are being given the support and the opportunity to revitalise their high streets.

  18. Improving local transport

    The government is giving councils more freedom to improve their local transport systems to make them more efficient and sustainable.

  19. Making sure UK airports and airlines are safe, secure and competitive while reducing their impacts on the environment and communities

    We're investing in coastal and seaside areas to help reverse their economic decline and to create opportunities for jobs and businesses.

  25. Supporting economic growth through local enterprise partnerships and enterprise zones

    Local enterprise partnerships and enterprise zones have been created to drive public sector growth and reduce administrative burdens.

  26. Supporting economic growth through managing the European Regional Development Fund

    The European Regional Development Fund has helped a wide variety of projects, which are designed to benefit regional or local economies.

  27. Sustaining a thriving maritime sector

    Enabling the maritime sector to grow efficiently to support economic growth.

  28. Promoting stability throughout the Western Balkans

    Securing peace and creating the conditions for EU membership in the Western Balkans
