Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Act gives you a right of access to official recorded information held by public bodies. This makes it easier for you to know how public bodies carry out their duties, how they make decisions and how they spend money. This creates a culture of openness and transparency and makes public bodies more accountable. This should lead to better decision making.

Under the Act, there are two ways you can obtain information:

  • through a publication scheme, or
  • by making a written request

Not all recorded information can be disclosed. Therefore, the Act also provides exemptions from disclosure. Some exemptions require the public body to carry out a 'public interest test' to decide whether or not to disclose requested information.

Detailed information about the Freedom of Information Act can be found on the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) website.

NIGB Publication scheme

Our website complies with the ICO Model Publication Scheme using the definition document for 'Non Departmental Public Bodies and other public authorities'.

From our website home page you will be able to navigate easily to whatever information you are looking for that we routinely publish.

We also maintain a 'guide' (list of links) to information on our website that falls within the seven classes of information as defined in the ICO Model Publication Scheme.

How can I make a Freedom of Information request to the NIGB?

You can write to us via letter or e-mail.  Your request must include your name (and/or the full name of your organisation if applicable) and an address for our response, which can be either a postal address or an e-mail address.  Your request must be in writing and describe the information you want.  You cannot make an FOI request over the telephone.

Before making a request, please check whether the information you want to see is already available on our website, including our existing register of Freedom of Information requests and responses.

Charges

The NIGB does not normally make a charge for providing information under the Freedom of Information Act.  However, if the cost of dealing with your request would be more than the appropriate cost limit under the Act (ICO website), we may not provide all the information requested.  We will tell you if this is the case.
