Education annual report 2012 published

07/05/2013 - 15:55

Report published

We are pleased to announce the publication today of the Education annual report 2012. The report provides an overview and analysis of the key trends from our approval and monitoring activities from 1 September 2011 to 31 August 2012.

During the 2011–12 academic year we:

  • conducted 67 approval visits to assess 110 programmes;
  • processed 477 annual monitoring submissions;
  • considered 316 major change notifications; and
  • investigated four concerns raised about approved programmes that were within our remit.

In addition, we finished our visits to practitioner psychologist and hearing aid dispenser programmes following the opening of these Registers in 2009 and 2010. An analysis of these visits is included in the report on pages 32-37.

Our work with new professions continues following the transfer of social workers in England from the General Social Care Council on 1 August 2012. At this time, we added 269 social work pre-registration programmes and 27 approved mental health professional (AMHP) programmes to our register of approved education and training programmes. These programmes now account for around a third of the approved programme register. Approval visits are now underway and will continue over the next three academic years.

The Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) initiative – a workforce strategy from the Department of Health – also had an impact on education programmes, with the creation of 16 new biomedical scientist programmes. We also approved a new route to registration for clinical scientists, which was modelled against the new MSC training pathway.

Meanwhile, practice placements were the topic of our popular education seminars during 2011–12. For the first time, we invited both education providers and placement educators to attend. This meant we were able to reach over 65 education providers and 26 placement providers. We have built on this success in 2012–13, holding additional seminars on practice placements and others on student fitness to practise and social work programmes.
