EPS Directions process restarting

The Department of Health has announced that the process for primary care trusts (PCTs) to apply to be listed in the Secretary of State Directions has restarted. (Published: 20 July 2012)

Secretary of State Directions are required before GPs and nurse prescribers can use an electronic signature to sign an electronic prescription and use the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS).

There will be two tranches for applications for PCTs that are not already included in the Directions. The deadline for tranche one is 1 August 2012 and 21 September 2012 for tranche two.

There are already 227 GP practices offering patients the chance to use EPS and so far almost half a million patients have chosen to nominate a pharmacy to receive their prescription electronically, saving the patient and their GP time and increasing convenience.

Restarting the directions process will mean more GP practices will be able to offer their patients the benefits of EPS.

For more information please see the Department of Health's letter to strategic health authorities and the EPS Secretary of State Directions page on this website.
