HealthSpace was a free, secure online personal health organiser. It had been helping users manage their health, store health information and find out about NHS services near to them. A HealthSpace account was available to anyone living in England, aged 16 or over, with a valid email address. HealthSpace closed on 14th December 2012 and the frequently asked questions below provide further information about this. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in the service.

Frequently asked questions

Why has HealthSpace closed?

The service was not as popular as we would have liked.  In addition, alternative approaches are being planned to give patients fuller access to their health information and the NHS Information Strategy, The Power of Information, contains further information on this.

Does the decision to close HealthSpace affect the Summary Care Record (SCR)?

No, the roll-out of SCR is unaffected by the decision to close HealthSpace.  The prime purpose of SCRs is to support improved patient safety and care in urgent and emergency care settings and clinicians are now starting to report a wide range of improvements as a result of their introduction.  As of mid March 2013, more than 24 million SCRs have been created across England. The implementation of the SCR is continuing at a significant pace.

What will happen to my data?

All data on HealthSpace, including your personal information, has now been securely destroyed; this is to comply with the Data Protection Act.

I didn't transfer my data out of HealthSpace in time.  What can I do?

Unfortunately, all data has now been destroyed in line with the Data Protection Act.

An advanced closure notice was posted on the HealthSpace site in September 2012.  This was visible to all users logging into the service or visiting the site. In addition, HealthSpace advanced account holders were contacted and provided with closure instructions.

FAQs to support users were developed and regularly reviewed throughout the notice period and to provide guidance and assistance.

Where else can I view my SCR?

HealthSpace was the only online mechanism in place for patients to access their SCRs.  However, you can ask your GP to allow you to view your SCR onscreen, or print out a copy from their practice's clinical IT system. The NHS information strategy, The Power of Information, has more information on how you will be able to access your records in the future.

How should I dispose of my secure log-in card?

Please dispose of your secure log-in card in the same way you would a bank or credit card.

Is there something similar to HealthSpace that I can use?

Whilst there are other health portals available, none of them offer the same service as HealthSpace or provide access to your SCR.  The NHS information strategy, The Power of Information, outlines the Department of Health's plans to provide patients with online access to their health information in the near future.
