Grants and funding

Grants and funding schemes which are especially relevant to Defra’s customers include the following:

  • The Single Payment Scheme (SPS), part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), is the principal agricultural subsidy scheme in the EU. Under the scheme farmers have freedom to farm to the demands of the market as payments are not linked to production, and environmentally friendly farming practices (known as cross compliance) are acknowledged.  Detailed information about the SPS scheme rules and the application process is available on the RPA’s website. A series of plain english summary guides on SPS is available in the farming section of the GOV.UK website.
  • Environmental Stewardship (ES), an agri-environment scheme which offers payments to farmers and land managers in England for effective land management to protect and enhance the environment and wildlife. The scheme is delivered for Defra by Natural England. A series of plain English guides on Environmental Stewardship is available from the GOV.UK website.

Research funding

Defra lets a large number of research projects every year. We do this in a number of ways, including:

  • competitions advertised on this site, either for individual projects or in the form of multiple project research requirements documents;
  • non-competitive arrangements, mainly at our science Agencies and other major contractors where we need to maintain certain expertise and facilities; and
  • in partnership with others, such as through LINK programmes.
