Recording memories

Projects were undertaken within the community to record the memories of the local population’s present generations. These provide a unique record of the area’s recent past: its social life, cultural diversity, work in its industries, and growing up during its war-time years.

Key projects included a series of documentary workshops, in which members of the public shared their local knowledge to add important living detail to our understanding of the area, and an oral history project, where people were able to give voice not only to their personal recollections, but also to the retold memories of their families’ and community’s earlier generations.
