Food and Farming

Tractor spraying crops in field

Supporting and developing British farming, and encouraging sustainable food production, is one of the three departmental priorities laid down in Defra’s Business Plan for 2012-15.

Our priority areas of work include:

  • Improving the productivity and competitiveness of food and farming businesses, with better environmental performance
  • Negotiating a smaller, simpler, greener Common Agricultural Policy
  • Negotiating a reformed Common Fisheries Policy to support sustainable fish stocks, a prosperous fishing industry and a healthy marine environment
  • Ensuring the Rural Payments Agency delivers the right service and value for money for the taxpayer
  • Implementing an effective and efficient animal health and welfare system, including services delivered by the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratory Agency and others
  • Reducing the spread of bovine tuberculosis
