Up to £30m investment in new technologies to help accelerate UK business innovation

31 Mar 2010

The Technology Strategy Board is to invest up to £30 million, in coming months, in five new research and development competitions. The investment is part of a wider £1bn funding programme, being rolled out by the Technology Strategy Board up to 2011, designed to support UK business and drive technology-enabled innovation.

The competitions, scheduled to open in May and June, are all designed to accelerate the development of innovative new technologies in a wide range of technology areas and include aims to: reduce the carbon emissions produced by buildings, encourage the uptake of new technologies that will help an ageing population remain independent for longer and increase the speed at which new innovations along the energy supply chain are able to enter the market, through smart metering and the development of smart grids.

Chief Executive of the Technology Strategy Board, Iain Gray said:

"Our programme of investment in innovative technology is already paying dividends for the UK, with many of the companies that we have supported moving through the innovation process and making ready to take their new products to market. We are still a young organisation, founded in 2007, but already the positive results of our activities are there for all to see."

"This Spring's investments will build on our ongoing programme of support for UK business, whether that be through competition processes, or the range of activity that we engage in to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing in a wide range of technology areas and business sectors across the UK."

The five competitions are: Building Performance Evaluation, Design for Future Climate, Nuclear Power Technology, Economic and Business Modelling & Social and Behavioural Studies, Smart Meters and Smart Grids. (Please see further information in Editor's Notes)
