Now published: Emerging technologies and industries strategy

In our role to drive innovation in the UK we aim to help turn the emerging technologies of today into the growth industries of tomorrow. Our Emerging technologies and Industries Strategy, available here, outlines the key issues in investing in technologies that could be 7-15 years away from the market.

Emerging technologies are those that are only just emerging from the science base, at an early pre-commercial stage and have the potential to introduce products and services that can truly disrupt a marketplace. Recent examples include the digital camera and PET medical imaging systems.

Our strategy has four elements:

  • to invest in technology demonstration
  • to build critical mass
  • to create a coordinated programme
  • to build and nurture capability.
