Finalists selected to pitch for share of £600,000 development funding

08 Oct 2010

Twelve small British companies have been selected to make a live pitch at a major event next week for a share of £600,000 of government funding to kick-start the development of new technology.

The twelve finalists were selected from about 550 businesses who submitted two-minute video pitches to the novel funding competition, managed by the government-backed Technology Strategy Board.  The twelve businesses will present their ideas to a live audience at the Innovate10 networking and innovation event in London on 12 October. The media are invited to attend Innovate10 to watch the companies pitch for the funding.

The Competition for Disruptive Solutions aims to stimulate innovative new ideas in four areas - energy, digital, healthcare and sustainability.  All twelve finalists are already guaranteed to receive £25,000 to help take their ideas forward - but the companies judged at Innovate10 to have made the best proposals in each of the four areas will receive £100,000.

The 550 video presentations were assessed by independent judges, who took account of public comments before selecting the best 15 ideas in each of the four themes and inviting them to make written submissions.  These 60 submissions were subject to a further independent assessment and the businesses behind the best three ideas in each theme were chosen to receive £25,000 funding and given the opportunity to pitch at Innovate10 to increase this to £100,000.

The pitches will be made by representatives from each of the companies.  Proposals range from a non-intrusive sensor to monitor the well-being of the elderly to new solar glazing technology and from the development of a donor skin cell spray to technology for the destruction of organics in water and wastewater. Summaries of each of the projects are provided in the Notes to Editors, below.

The live pitches will take place in front of a panel of expert independent judges - three for each technology area - with the Innovate10 audience acting as the fourth judge.  The winners will be announced at the event.
