UK and Britain

Formally speaking:

  • ‘Great Britain’ refers only to England, Wales and Scotland, and excludes Northern Ireland
  • ‘Britain’ (without the Great) is short for ‘the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’. So Britain and British are synonymous with United Kingdom.

We favour the modern usage of UK and United Kingdom over Britain and British (UK business, United Kingdom foreign policy, UK embassy and ambassador and high commissioner).
