Sub-national electricity consumption data

DECC has collected and compiled estimates of electricity consumption at regional (NUTS1) and local authority levels (LAU1 – formally NUTS 4) using aggregated Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) readings throughout Great Britain as part of DECC’s annual meter point electricity data exercise.

In March 2008, this electricity consumption dataset gained National Statistics status. This status applies to all data from 2005 onwards. Please note that the 2003 and 2004 data are still classed as experimental.

Electricity consumption statistics for 2003 to 2004 (experimental), and 2005 to 2011 (National Statistics) are available below. Included in the dataset are estimates of:

Analysis into electricity consumption by consuming sector for Great Britain, and Regional/devolved administration areas, together with some commentary relating to local authority trends , is included in the below factsheet.

For further details on the methodology, assumptions and data interpretation relating to the electricity consumption statistics, please refer to the Sub-national methodology and guidance booklet for regional energy data which are available on the Sub-national energy consumption statistics web page.

Readers are highly advised to familiarise themselves with the material in the guidance booklet before using the data.

In-line with ONS recommendations regarding presentation of sub-national National Statistics, the following dataset, for 2010 to 2011 data only, reflects the local government reorganisation operative from 1 April 2009.

Domestic electricity consumption in 2009 and non-domestic electricity consumption in 2010 in Northern Ireland at District Council level are available below:
