Prince Of Wales event on international forests, 29th November 2012

On 29th November DECC Secretary of State Edward Davey and Minister Gregory Barker co-hosted a meeting with His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales to discuss international progress on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+).

The objectives were to announce UK plans for a significant new forests programme, and to jointly with other donors send a strong signal to the international community at the Climate Change Conference in Doha on the need to scale up REDD+ delivery pre-2020, in order to limit the increase in global temperature to below 2ºC.

Edward Davey outlined the government’s plans for a major new investment in forests for 2013-2015 under the International Climate Fund (ICF), centred on addressing the drivers of deforestation, working with the private sector and developing countries.

He also announced £15m of ICF funding for a low carbon agricultural project with Colombia, working with cattle farmers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect forests, increase biodiversity and improve livelihoods, and an ambition for a deeper dialogue on forests with Colombia around their plans for the Amazon region.

Participants included a number of Ministers (Indonesia, Norway, US, Democratic Republic of Congo, Colombia), private sector representatives (Unilever, Kingfisher, Olam, Maggi, Carbon Markets Investors Association) and NGOs (WWF, The Rainforest Foundation UK, Global Canopy Programme, Forest Peoples Programme), and the UK and other donors present made a joint statement on our ambition to work together to tackle deforestation.

The International Climate Fund is a £2.9bn UK fund managed by DECC, DFID and Defra to support developing countries with low carbon development, adaptation and forest conservation as part of the international effort to tackle climate change.
