MATRIX, the Northern Ireland Science Industry Panel, was born out of the Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS) for Northern Ireland. It was tasked in February 2007 with bringing forward-focused advice on the future policies necessary for Northern Ireland to ensure economic growth and wealth creation through greater commercial exploitation of its science and technology capabilities.

Through its Horizon Technology and Market Foresight programme, MATRIX has produced a clear and evidence-based overview of the five key technology sectors considered to be of highest economic significance to Northern Ireland: Agrifood, Advanced Engineering, Advanced Materials, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Life and Health Sciences.
