New research to show how advanced uses of metadata can increase the value of digital content

Nine major development projects that will create new metadata production tools to increase the value of digital content are to share nearly £3 million of grant funding from the government-backed Technology Strategy Board (  The grants span the breadth of the creative industries and have been awarded to companies working in architecture, design, fashion, film, television, computer games and publishing.

The projects will create tools that make the production of digital content more cost-effective, less risky and yield greater value through new advanced uses of metadata.  Metadata describes other data and provides information about its content.   An image, for example, may include metadata about the picture’s size, resolution, colour depth and origin.  Metadata may describe how data was collected and how it is formatted.  Web pages often include metadata, which describes content.

The companies leading the R&D work will deliver a prototype, demonstrator or similar solution built around a content-based service or application which has the potential to enter the market within two years of the completion of each project.  Their efforts will help reduce costs in the production process, raise quality and allow the UK to continue differentiating itself as a world-leading content producer.

 Nick Appleyard, Head of Digital at the Technology Strategy Board, said:

“There are many exciting projects here.  Metadata is relevant to everyone working in digital production.  This funding will drive the development of metadata tools that will both increase production and enable commercialisation, at component and object level as well as for completed works.”

The nine projects will be lead by Aedas R&D, Brainient Ltd, the British Broadcasting Corporation, Direct Traffic Media, Dolphin Computer Access Ltd, FilmLight Ltd, Legendary Games Ltd, Lutwyche Bespoke and ZOO Digital Group plc.
