Future technology for armed forces boosted by innovation

  • Technology Strategy Board and Ministry of Defence work together to encourage companies to develop innovative technologies that meet government needs
  • Research and business community invited to engage in process at series of events
  • Opportunities for businesses to compete for funding, provided throughout 2009, by Ministry of Defence's Centre for Defence Enterprise

The organisation that has been created to drive technological innovation in the UK is working with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to encourage innovative businesses to work with government to help solve some of the biggest challenges faced by the UK's armed forces.

The Technology Strategy Board is working with the MOD's Centre for Defence Enterprise (CDE) to encourage small to medium companies (SMEs) to offer innovative solutions to some of the MOD's biggest technological challenges, with a view to successful projects leading to departmental procurement.

Dr Helen Almey head of the CDE said: "To provide battle winning capability it is vital that new ideas, technologies and approaches are brought into the defence arena and pulled through to our armed forces as quickly as possible.

The ideas and innovation within business enterprise, whether they have worked in the defence sector before or not, may be crucial to providing our forces with the technical edge they need."

Innovative businesses are being encouraged to take part in MOD events designed to help them understand the complex requirements of the UK armed forces and find out about plans for delivering defence research in the next few years.  Participants are being offered the opportunity to meet MOD experts and decision makers and to learn about opportunities to compete for funding, that would enable them to develop technological solutions for the MOD.

An event on 24 March will focus on portable energy ideas for soldiers and will take place at Defence Research 2009, a two-day MOD event to be held at the International Conference Centre in Birmingham.

The Technology Strategy Board's partnership with the Ministry of Defence is being managed through the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) and participants at the events will also have the opportunity to find out more about SBRI, a programme that encourages the procurement of innovative technology solutions by a number of government departments.
