HMS Sultan is the home of Royal Naval School of Marine Engineering (RNSME) and the Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival School (RNAESS) whose primary function is to supply the Fleet with engineering Officers and Ratings of the highest quality.

Military experience

Commodore Mark Slawson joined the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer Officer in January 1978. He is married to Clare. They have one son, Edward, and they will live as a family in Sultan House during his time in command at HMS Sultan. A qualified dinghy sailor and scuba diver, his interests include rugby (though now limited to supporting), walking, reading, and he aspires (and always has) to be fitter. He is a trustee of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.

Born and raised in Wrexham in North Wales, Commodore Slawson was educated at Grove Park Grammar School and Yale Sixth Form College, before joining the Royal Navy. After initial training at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and in HMS Fearless, Commodore Slawson graduated with a degree in Naval Engineering from the Royal Naval Engineering College, Manadon in June 1981. Following Marine Engineering Application Course, where he obtained his engineering watchkeeping qualifications in HMS Torquay, his first complement sea job was as Deputy Marine Engineer Officer in HMS Nottingham. A second sea job as DMEO, standing by the build of HMS Campbeltown, was preceded by a shore appointment in HMS Sultan. He gained experience of the equipment procurement and support world in MOD(PE) as the desk officer for Maritime Pollution Equipment, before returning to sea as the Marine Engineer Officer of HMS Monmouth from 1993-96. Following RN Staff Course, he joined the Fleet Headquarters staff in Northwood as Deputy Fleet Operations Maintenance Officer, before being promoted to Commander, into the role of Project Contract Manager (Destroyers) in Rosyth. He then served as a staff officer to the Chief Executive of the Warship Support Agency and followed this with a further sea charge job as Commander (Engineering) in HMS Ocean. Following appointments as the Engineer Commanders’ Career Manager and as Marine Systems Manager in the Major Warships Project Team he was promoted to Captain in May 2004.

As a Captain, he served as Superintendent Fleet Maintenance in Portsmouth Naval Base until becoming Assistant Director (Engineering) in the Directorate of Naval Career Management in February 2006. He became the first Engineering Naval Personnel Team Leader, with responsibility for career management, branch management and training requirement for the RN engineering branch following re-organisation as part of the Fleet ‘Transformation’ programme. He was selected for Commodore in 2008, and after completing a Masters degree in Business Administration at Cranfield University, was promoted into the post of Head of Customer Support Team (Fleet) in Defence Engineering and Support in September 2009, before taking command of the Defence College of Electro-Mechanical Engineering, and HMS Sultan, in March 2010. On 1 September 2010, he was appointed Aide de Camp to Her Majesty the Queen.
