What are the aims of The Productive Operating Theatre?

The Productive Operating Theatre aims to help theatre teams deliver significant improvements in:

  • patient’s experience and outcomes
  • safety and reliability of care
  • effective team-working and staff wellbeing
  • efficiency and value

It is focused on eliminating errors, introducing briefing, debriefing and communication techniques so that everyone in the theatre team understands what is going on, and learning from near misses.

Who is the programme for?
The programme is for staff who work in theatres including consultant surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre matrons, perioperative practitioners, managers and operating department practitioners. It also highlights the crucial role of the Trust Board, and an executive sponsor in supporting innovation and improvement.

For more on this read the Executive Leader’s Guide and the Programme Leader’s Guide.
