You could get Guardian’s Allowance if you’re bringing up a child whose parents have died.
You could also be eligible if there is one surviving parent:
- in prison or hospital
- who isn’t paying for the child’s upbringing
- who can’t be traced.
You’re paid Guardian’s Allowance at a rate of £14.75 a week. You get it on top of Child Benefit.
Guardian’s Allowance is a tax-free payment and isn’t counted as income for other benefits.
