Area 12

The Highways Agency - Area 12

The Highways Agency is the network operator responsible for managing, maintaining and improving the motorway and trunk road network in England. We are committed to continuous improvement and have made significant changes to the way we maintain the network.

Area 12 comprises approximately 326 miles (525 kilometres) of motorway and trunk roads and over 1300 structures (such as bridges and gantries) throughout Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

From the 1st October 2009 the Highways Agency appointed A-One+ (a joint venture of Halcrow/Colas/Costain) as its Managing Agent Contractor for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire and will be entrusting it with the responsibility of managing its motorway and trunk road network.

On behalf of the Highways Agency, A-One+ will undertake about 550 improvement and renewal schemes per year. Schemes will range from £500 to £10 million in cost and include works to highways, structures, electrical installations and landscaping.

Roads in Area 12

24-hour Network Control Centre

The North East Regional Control Centre (NERCC) in Wakefield operates 24hrs a day, liaising with emergency services to ensure that incidents on our road network are dealt with quickly and efficiently and minimize disruption to road users.

Highways Agency Traffic Officers

Traffic Officers patrol motorways and the A1 Trunk Road, all day every day helping drivers. They enable us to deliver a safer road network, more reliable journey times, provide better information and reduce incident-related congestion. Traffic Officers also free up the Police allowing them to concentrate on incident management, crime and law enforcement.

Incident Support Units

Co-ordinated by the NERCC, a dedicated fleet of vehicles with fully trained staff operates on the network, reacting quickly to incidents and supporting our Traffic Officer Service and the Police in clearing these incidents.

The Area Road Users' Satisfaction Survey (ARUSS)

The ARUSS is a survey of road users and neighbours of our network.  It is a continuous, rolling programme of surveys with 66 interviews per month in each of the agency's fourteen regions. The survey measures road users' attitudes on area level issues and identifies what area teams need to do to improve their services for customers.
