London marks new year with two minute silence for victims of tsunami

1 JANUARY 2005

Hundreds of thousands of Londoners marked the new year by observing a two minute silence for the victims of the tsunami in Asia, followed by the most spectacular firework display London has ever seen.

Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, who organised the events, said: 'Tonight Londoners offered their condolences to the victims of the tsunami and pledged to do everything they can to assist those whose lives have been devastated by this tragedy.'

A message to 150,000 people lining the Embankment area urged people to contribute to the relief effort.
