Improvements in infection reduction can only be sustained over time if they are supported by a fundamental change in the culture of the organisation.

A ‘board to ward’ culture has a ‘zero tolerance to avoidable infection’ which is embedded at every level of the organisation. A ‘board to ward’ organisation places infection prevention and control at the heart of its practice.

Sustainable change in the culture of an organisation will occur only if staff change their mindset. Organisations can develop a board to ward culture by:

  • Establishing a clear vision
  • Providing effective leadership
  • Ensuring competence
  • Communicating clear accountability
  • Putting an assurance framework in place
  • Learning from others

Implementing these principles can help staff at every level of the organisation be clear about their role and how to make their contribution to HCAI improvement.

This section will also set out in a practical way suggested objectives, practices, deliverables and outcomes to help teams at all levels define roles, responsibilities, outcome measures and performance indicators across the workforce.

Further information can also be obtained outlining the importance of putting an assurance framework in place. The framework can be used by every member of the organisation to assure organisations’ boards, management, clinical and medical staff, patients and the wider public, that the safety agenda is of high priority and is being well managed.
