Board appointments bring fresh experience to Yorkshire Forward


Business Minister Pat McFadden today announced two new appointments to the Board of Yorkshire Forward.

Heidi Mottram and Sharon Allen will take up their three year appointments on 14 December 2009 until 13 December 2012.

Pat McFadden said: “I am very pleased to be able to make these appointments to the Board of Yorkshire Forward.

“They bring a real wealth of experience and leadership to the role and the contribution they can make will be extremely valuable to the RDA’s work supporting growth in the region as the UK moves towards economic recovery.”

Regional Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber Rosie Winterton said: "These appointments to the Board of Yorkshire Forward are welcome news. I am confident they will make a positive contribution that will help put the region in the strongest possible position for the future.”

Yorkshire Forward Chairman Terry Hodgkinson said: “I am delighted at the appointment of Heidi Mottram and Sharon Allen to the Yorkshire Forward Board.  Their knowledge and industry expertise will be an asset to the work of Yorkshire Forward and their dedication to the region, as we work our way out of these tough economic times, will be greatly valued.”

  1. Regional Development Agency Board Member posts attract a remuneration of £8,666 per year for a time commitment of a minimum of 2 days per month.
  2. The appointments were made following open competition in accordance with the requirements set down in the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political affiliation plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public.

Heidi Mottram

Heidi has worked in the rail industry since the mid – 1980s, starting her career with British Rail as an Operations Management Trainee.

She has been Managing Director of Northern Rail since it started in December 2004 and has led the setting up and transformation of what was supposed to be a ‘steady state’ franchise into one of the fastest growing and most enterprising train operators since privatisation, which runs more trains each day than any other operator.

She has overseen a Transformation which includes:

  • Attracting 34% more customers since Northern started
  • Improving punctuality from 83% of trains being on time to 90.23% of trains on time, despite having one of the oldest and most diverse train fleets in the country
  • Attracting more than £70m of external investment into Northern providing more and newer trains to increase capacity by eight million seats per annum
  • Winning major awards – the  HSBC Rail Operator of the Year in 2007 being one of many

Heidi is a Director of Northern Rail Ltd.

Sharon Allen

Sharon has been Chief Executive of St Anne’s Community Services for over six years.  St Anne’s is a regional voluntary sector organisation providing a range of social care and supported housing services.

Since being appointed, Sharon has led the organisation through a period of significant and planned growth, increasing turnover by 89% [from £18m] to £34m and the staff group from 800 to 1250.

Sharon is a Board member of the following organisations:

  • Homeless Link (term end October 2009)
  • Yorkshire & Humber Regional forum
  • St Anne’s Shelter & Housing Action Trading Ltd
  • Affinity Trust (previously TACT)
  • Volition

Sharon holds no other Directorships.
