Published statistics about the experience of NHS patients

There are several different statistical publications that report on the experience of NHS patients. This page provides information about Department of Health publications derived from the National Patient Survey Programme, details of which are provided below. Results from the GP patient survey can be found using the links on the right side of this page.

The main statistical product published by the Department is the ‘overall patient experience scores’. This uses responses that NHS patients gave in surveys to calculate a summary of overall national scores for patient experience in the NHS, in a way that allows valid comparisons to be made from one year to the next.

In addition, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) publish a detailed overview from the same surveys, which summarises question by question results for all NHS Trusts. Results can be found on the CQC website under the published data heading below.
