About Professor Louis Appleby: As National Director for Mental Health from 2000 to 2010, Professor Appleby led a number of reforms of mental health services, particularly to community care.

Professor Appleby also led initiatives to reduce suicides and improve the physical environment of mental health wards.

In his new post, which he took up in April 2010, he aims to improve the health care of offenders and, in particular, reduce the number of mentally ill people in prison.
