Machine roomless lifts

The rescue of passengers trapped in lifts is an important part of the training provided by lift installers to Healthcare bodies.  Many healthcare providers have prefered in generally for lift drive units to be located within the lift shafts rather than in a separate lift motor room.  These lift types are known as machine roomless (MRL) lifts and are available in different sizes including bed passenger lifts.

The Department has issued an Estates and Facilities Alert in order to clarify requirements for MRL lift installations with regard to power supplies, maintenance checks and rescue procedures in the event of breakdowns. Further information is available here.
