Nutrient analysis of biscuits, buns and processed foods

The results of two surveys have been published as part of the Department’s rolling programme of nutrient analysis.

In the first survey foods analysed included biscuits, buns, cakes, pastries, tarts, fruit pies and doughnuts. Samples purchased during September and December 2008 were analysed for energy and range of nutrients including fat, protein, carbohydrate, fibre and full range of vitamins and minerals.

In a separate survey analysis was carried out on a range of processed foods with particular reference to trans fatty acids. Samples, purchased between January and April 2010, included a range of fish and meat products, chips, savoury snacks, confectionery and ice-cream.

These and similar surveys of food composition are incorporated into the nutrient databanks used in dietary surveys to monitor the nation’s diet.
