Developing Payment by Results for mental health

Work continues on developing currencies for use in the commissioning of mental health services for adults of working age and older people. The White Paper, Equity and excellence: liberating the NHS, said the Department will "implement a set of currencies for adult mental health services for use from 2012/13, and develop currencies for child and adolescent services."  It also committed to "develop payment systems to support the commissioning of talking therapies."

The mental health PbR development national project is now moving into the implementation phase. On 18 February 2011, we published an updated version of the clustering Booklet for Mental Health PbR which now contains the transition protocols.  The PbR guidance for 2011/12 was also published on the same date.  Section 9 sets out the steps that organisations should be taking over the coming year to prepare for the introduction of PbR in mental health in April 2012.

Updates on recent development work can be found in the section marked 'Factsheets' below.

They are made available for wider use as long as fidelity to the model is maintained.
