The aim of Payment by Results (PbR) is to provide a transparent, rules-based system for paying trusts. It will reward efficiency, support patient choice and diversity and encourage activity for sustainable waiting time reductions. Payment will be linked to activity and adjusted for casemix. Importantly, this system will ensure a fair and consistent basis for hospital funding rather than being reliant principally on historic budgets and the negotiating skills of individual managers.

The aim of this guide is to provide an introduction for newcomers to PbR, from NHS health professionals, managers and administrators, to people engaged in academic study and interested members of the public both in the UK and abroad. In addition, we are producing a series of simple guides which explore PbR in more detail for specific services.
Please see letter offering additional information, and asking for volunteer organisations to be involved in the costing and pricing phase of the Maternity PbR Pathway Project. The Audit Commission's PbR data assurance framework is a programme of clinical coding audits aimed at improving data quality in the NHS.
The development and implementation of PbR is supported by a number of governance and advisory groups.
