World AIDS Day – Are you at risk of flu?

Professor Dame Sally Davies Chief Medical OfficerBy Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies.

On World AIDS Day, it is important to remind those in the ‘at risk’ groups how important it is to keep safe and well during the cold winter months. On average, they are 11 times more likely to become seriously ill from flu than those without risk factors.

Flu vaccinations are vital to keeping healthy those who may be pregnant, have a respiratory condition or are immunocompromised.

Figures this week show us that 45.3% of people in the at risk groups have currently been vaccinated. These figures are encouraging but they are still too low.

I urge everybody that is in an at risk group or is entitled to a flu vaccination to contact their GP and book in as soon as possible.
