MAIB Accident Investigation Report

Liquid Vortex

Key issues:

  • The accident was caused when Liquid Vortex gybed unexpectedly.
  • The skipper went forward to assist the crew, leaving a relatively inexperienced helmswoman steering the yacht.
  • During the unexpected gybe the helmswoman was struck by the main sheet and suffered a severe spinal injury.

How to report an accident
By law accidents, including major injuries, must be reported to the MAIB by the quickest possible means. This is so they can be investigated immediately before vital evidence decays, is removed or is lost.
