Foreign and Defence Policy

PM in AfghanistanThe Cabinet Office sits at the centre of government, with the overarching purpose of making government work better. We support the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Cabinet, helping to ensure effective development, coordination and implementation of policy and operations across all government departments. We also lead work to ensure that the Civil Service provides the most effective and efficient support to the Government to help it meet its objectives.

The National Security Secretariat supports the effective operation of the National Security Council, prepares for and manages the coordination of the Government’s response to crises, plan and manage a transformative cyber security programme for the UK, and develop a better framework for the management of national security and intelligence material in the courts.

As part of the National Security Secretariat, the Foreign and Defence Policy Secretariat’s objectives are:  to support the National Security Council (NSC) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) on all matters relating to foreign and defence policy; to provide effective support to Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister with timely advice and briefing on strategic foreign and defence issues; to manage and coordinate HMG’s policy and on Afghanistan and other key countries/regions and; to fulfil the responsibilities of Cabinet Office to the Iraq Inquiry.
