Halton Economic Review 2008

Halton Economic Review 2008 - Executive Summary

Roads

Haltonís pivotal position at the centre of the countryís motorway network means that Runcorn and Widnes can be reached from most parts of the UK by car in a matter of hours.

The M56 (Manchester) and M62 (Liverpool-Hull) motorways bisect the borough and the M6 is only a few miles beyond the borough boundary.

There are also ambitious plans for a second Mersey river crossing. The Mersey Gateway is a £390million project that would provide a new bridge over the River Mersey between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes and includes modifications to the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge to improve facilities for public transport, walking and cycling. It is expected that the Mersey Gateway project will be complete and the new crossing open by 2014.
