Future Project with Britten Sinfonia in Norwich

Orchestras Live, Norwich City Council and the Britten Sinfonia have been working on a project bringing together different musical genres and performance styles. The project aims to develop participation and engagement with professional orchestral music by involving groups of young people who would not normally be involved, and at the same time broaden the repertoire of young orchestral students with a view of each group learning from the other, facilitated by a professional orchestra and workshop leaders.

The project also involves young music technology students attending Future Projects and The Garage. In order to complete the mix, students with orchestral music experience via the County Youth Orchestra were invited to join the project.

The project is now underway, with the participants working towards a performance in April 2011 at the Theatre Royal in Norwich.

Widening Opportunities Programme

Two schools in West Norfolk have reached the final round of The National Festival of Music For Youth, to be held at Birmingham Conservatoire on July 4th. The qualifying heat was held in March at Springwood High School, King's Lynn, where Yr 1/2 from West Lynn Primary and Yr 5/6 from Greyfriars Primary gave outstanding performances. Greyfriars have continued their successful Ukulele playing from last year, and West Lynn are delighted to have got through first time performing with rhythm sticks, spoons, boomwhackers, and singing/dancing a Ghanaian song. Both schools are part of the Widening Opportunities Programme run by the Norfolk Music Service, and led by Jessica Berners.
