Farm Animal Welfare Council

FAWC News Release

FAWC - The crucial link between economics and farm animal welfare

The Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC) has set up a Working Group to examine the challenges and opportunities relating to Economics and the Welfare of Farm Animals.

Professor Wathes said “The aim of the new Group will be to analyse the relationships between economics, livestock production and farm animal welfare. It will make recommendations to Government on relevant actions to safeguard and promote welfare, highlighting the benefits throughout the food chain. It will deal with questions relating to the profitability of farming and its consequences for welfare, the economic opportunities afforded by animals raised to higher welfare standards, and issues relating to world trade in animal products. The report is a logical successor to previous FAWC advice to Government on farm assurance schemes (2005), and on labelling food according to welfare provenance (2006).”

Comments are now being sought from interested parties. These should be sent to the above address below by 14 September 2007. Copies of the consultation letter are available to download from Once approved by the full Council, the report will be submitted to Ministers and published.  The Group will be chaired by Professor Sandra Edwards assisted by Dr Mike Appleby, Professor Richard Bennett, Mr Huw Davies, Mr Gwyn Jones, Mrs Ruth Layton and Mr Steven Tait.

Notes for Editors

1. The Farm Animal Welfare Council is an independent, non-departmental public body. It was established by Government in 1979 to keep under review the welfare of farmed animals on agricultural land, at market, in transit and at the place of slaughter; and to advise the Government of any legislative or other changes it considers necessary.

2. FAWC is chaired by Professor Christopher Wathes who holds the Chair of Animal Welfare at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London.
