Resources description:
  • A set of pictures of people experiencing a feeling of anger. These can include children and adults in a variety of contexts.
  • Flipchart paper and pens/pencils for recording.
Warm up/starter:

The Shape Game

The teacher can randomly distribute sticky shapes among the students, sticking these onto the students’ foreheads. However, it is important that the students do not see what their shape is. The teacher can make use of two or three different shapes, eg circle, star, triangle, moon etc. Different coloured stars can be used if shapes are unavailable. The aim here is for the students to then group themselves according to the shapes on their foreheads. For example, all the circles together, all the stars together, etc. They are not, however, allowed to talk during this activity and are also not allowed to mime what someone’s shape is. The teacher can time how quickly they are able to get into the correct groups. Subsequent to this activity it may be useful to focus on how it felt to be helped and supported by others in this activity and to reinforce the fact that all of us need help and support at various times and for various reasons.

This is an activity in which students are encouraged to work together and focus on further developing co-operation skills.

Core activity:

Within a circle discussion group layout the series of pictures around the circle and ask students to offer their views as to what they think is happening in each picture:

  • Why is the person angry?
  • What have they experienced?
  • How can you tell that they are feeling angry?
  • What is their body language like?
  • What do you think they are thinking and saying?
  • What do you think will happen next?

The students can then be asked to engage in a circle time discussion using the following prompt questions which can be written onto the flipchart paper:

  • What sort of things make you feel angry?
  • How do you feel when someone makes you angry?
  • What are you physical reactions to your anger?
  • What are the usual consequences of you feeling angry?
  • How do others react?
  • What do you do?
  • What could you do differently?
  • The students can be encouraged to provide examples and the teacher can then highlight any similarities or differences in their responses.
Applying learning:

The students can be asked to complete an anger diary for a period of one week recording the antecedents, the behaviours and the consequences on a daily basis. What has made them respond in this way, ie what was the situation? What triggered their anger? What did they then do and what were the consequences?

This can then be reviewed at the start of the next session with students highlighting anything they did which was particularly useful rather than simply focusing on any negative and more destructive responses.
