Know the gap in science

There are a range of strategies which schools can use to 'know the gaps' that exist in pupils' achievement in science.

The National Strategies researched the key strategies used in 25 schools that had reduced underperformance in science, particularly for free school meals (FSM) pupils. These schools all had:

  • a relentless focus on working with underperforming pupils using robust data
  • set challenging but achievable targets
  • regular identification of underperforming/at risk pupils
  • robust tracking systems
  • teachers confident in using data to support learning for vulnerable or underperforming pupils.
