Watch a video that shows pupils planning and discussing food options for an event, as part of a data-handling problem. This is one of seven videos that exemplify activities within Lesson 1 Episode 1 from the medium-term plan for data handling.

Student 1
You could have, you know, like a barbeque kind of thing. That could be healthy, though. They’re not all going to have some fruit because they don’t all like it.
Student 2
You have to find out, though, you have to find out if they’re allergic to stuff, so you could contact all their parents and you could ask them to find out what they’re allergic to and then you could, you know, not let that… put, like, warnings in the food.
Student 3
Maybe letters, like, sent home?
Student 4
Yeah, and you could say, like, if you’re… because people don’t… if you’re just trying to put some fruit in a bowl and people won’t want to eat that. You have to make it look, like, a bit nicer so people will want to eat it.
Student 1
You could do, like, a pasta bar, or something. Or a sandwich bar, or something that actually people would like.
Student 4
You could have warm food instead. Or you could have something a bit like, not soups, but something like crisps, say, but, like, a healthier option. You know things you get in restaurants, like, salad bars, you could go round and you could just pick out bits that you want.
Student 1
So we could put, like, pizza and own toppings.
Student 2
That’s not exactly... they’re trying to introduce healthy food, though.
Student 1
Yeah, but it would be healthy stuff that you could offer, like mushrooms and salad on the pizza.
Student 4
Thinking about all the cold food, why don’t we have something like potato wedges or something like that… because they’re a bit like chips like everyone normally eats but they’re a bit healthier.
Student 1
Why don’t you think of, like, when does your family ever have a buffet?
Student 2
Yeah…
Student 1
Why don’t you think what they put out there? They put scotch eggs…
