Sequencing instructions in the classroom

You can use these continuing professional development (CPD) activities to help you gain greater understanding of how pupils can be taught sequencing instructions.

You will become familiar with:

  • the place of sequencing instructions in the National Curriculum Programme of study for ICT and what progression for pupils looks like
  • how to apply your knowledge, skills and understanding to create programs
  • how to plan for effective and successful lessons to develop pupils' understanding of sequences of instructions.

Before you begin these activities, you should be familiar with the software covered in Developing your knowledge, skills and understanding in sequencing instructions.

The activities here are a starting point for your exploration of teaching the topic. This section works best when small groups of teachers work through it together. Take time to talk through the discussion points, relating what is here to what you know about your own pupils and your own curriculum. The activities are designed to be studied in the order shown below.

Some of the links in the activities and resources may be out of date. You will find updated links in Related Links.
