Versatile reader

The versatile reader is probably assessed as level 7 or GCSE grade C/B, is a critical and thoughtful reader across a wide range of texts – selecting, sifting, summarising, comparing and contrasting.

For a more detailed description of pupils working at level 7 in reading, see the versatile reader progression map.

Setting targets for the competent reader

Identify target level and assessment focus areas and select the most appropriate targets based on your knowledge of the pupil’s work or by using the pupil’s APP guideline sheet.

If pupils are at low level 7, they will still need level 7 targets in some areas.

If pupils are at secure or high level 7, they will still need targets working towards level 8.
