Communication skills

This topic is designed to help pupils develop the broader skills of communication. This includes listening to others, showing empathy, initiating, maintaining and ending conversations, and reading ‘body language’ and other non-verbal forms of communication. Pupils may benefit from this focus group topic if a difficulty with communication represents a barrier to their learning and/or relationships with peers or adults.

This topic is designed to help young people to:

  • become more aware of the different forms of communication
  • develop listening skills
  • develop conversational skills
  • understand how body language can influence feelings and responses
  • develop non-verbal communication skills.
