SEAD: Theme 1 – New beginnings

You can use these materials to support children's development in four key areas: empathy, self-awareness, social skills and motivation. It is one of the seven themes within Social and Emotional Aspects of Development (SEAD).

In New beginnings (PDF-498 KB) Attachments you'll find support for your planning and ongoing assessment with connections to the learning framework for Personal, Social and Emotional Area of Learning and Development. You'll also find key vocabulary, suggested questions and 'Look, listen and note' points to help you chart children's development.

There are games, stories, and activities throughout, which are also supported by comments from practitioners on what they did and why.

An example sequence of work completes the booklet, to show how you might structure learning in relation to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and other curriculum objectives.

You can also download resources that support the activities throughout the booklet. These include posters, a set of images, stories and an interactive 'create-a-face' game.
